Abstract::The Itihasa-Purana tradition, comprising the epic narratives of the Ramayana and the
Mahabharata, along with a vast corpus of Puranic literature, holds a significant place in India’s cultural
heritage. This essay explores the origins, characteristics, and relevance of the Itihasa-Purana tradition in
understanding Indian history. We examine RomilaThapar’s critique, which challenges the strict historical
authenticity of these texts, emphasizing their mythological and religious nature. Nevertheless, we argue
that the Itihasa-Purana tradition offers invaluable insights into ancient Indian culture, religious beliefs,
and societal norms. Interweaving mythology, history, and moral teachings, these narratives present a
unique perspective on the Indian historical consciousness. The Itihasa-Purana tradition delves into the
deep philosophical and moral quests of ancient societies, focusing on themes of dharma, devotion, and
the triumph of good over evil. Despite not adhering to Western or Chinese historical standards, the
tradition’s emphasis on cultural processes and meanings provides a distinct approach to comprehending
the past. Critics often question the historical accuracy of these texts, but archaeological findings and
cross-referencing with external accounts reveal corroborative elements within the narratives. The
concept of time in Indian history, represented by yugas and cyclic patterns, contrasts with the linear
progression found in other civilizations. The Itihasa-Purana tradition emphasizes cultural continuity and
renewal through traditional storytelling practices. Rather than imposing foreign standards on Indian
historiography, intercultural discussions should appreciate its unique values and approaches. The
Itihasa-Purana tradition forms a crucial part of India’s historical memory, reflecting a blend of myth,
history, and moral allegory.
