Abstract::Abstract:The territory of West Dinajpur formerly Pundravardhana had a glory in education from
ancient times. Bhadrabahu, Sandhakara Nandi, Dharvapani, and Kedara Mishra were born in the
territory. In the medieval period Jagat Jiban Ghosal, the son of this soil wrote Mangal Kabvya. But
with the advent of the British East India Company the education system was devastated. In the second
half of the 19th century, there was steady growth in this arena but it was confined only to two police
stations Dinajpur and Thakurgaon. After partition due to refugee rehabilitation, some sort of pace
had been found as the literacy rate among the upper caste Hindu people of East Bengal was more
than the district. The number of schools had increased. The host people and the refugees of
consecutive waves were in back strata regarding education. This situation was altered with the land
reform program because due to this reform huge number of people got the capacity to spend little
money for the cause of education of their children.
