Abstract::Abstract::The history of the Parikud kingdom, a princely state in Chilika, remains largely obscure in
academic discussions. Although it did not have a direct connection to the mainland of Odisha, the
rulers of this state were dedicated to serving their people. Just as the history of Odisha was influenced
by the occupations of the Afghans, Mughals, Marathas, and the British, so too was the history of the
Parikud princely state shaped by these events. Due to its small geographical size, it was not
recognised as a princely state by the Mughals and Marathas; instead, Parikud was referred to as a
Zamindari territory or Jagir, and its ruler was called a Zamindar rather than a king. Despite its
obscured past, Parikud’s history is quite poignant. While many princely states faced popular
resistance movements in the first half of the twentieth century, the kings of Parikud simultaneously
worked diligently for the welfare of their people, earning a reputation as benevolent rulers. This
initiative seeks to illuminate the often-overlooked history of this princely state.
