Abstract::Abstract:Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of nationalism was deeply rooted in the principles of Swaraj (selfrule), nonviolent resistance (Ahimsa), and truth (Satya). Unlike conventional nationalism, which often
fosters aggressive patriotism and territorial expansion, Gandhi’s idea of nationalism was inclusive,
ethical, and centred on moral regeneration. His concept of Swaraj was not just political independence
from British rule but also self-governance at an individual and societal level, emphasizing selfdiscipline, economic self-sufficiency, and social harmony. This paper explores Gandhi’s distinctive
approach to nationalism, analysing its philosophical underpinnings and practical applications in the
Indian independence movement. It also evaluates the relevance of his ideas in contemporary global
politics, where aggressive nationalism and socio-political conflicts continue to shape world affairs.
Gandhi’s vision offers an alternative model of nationalism—one that upholds ethical values, fosters
peace, and promotes sustainable development. His ideology remains a guiding light for movements
advocating human rights, social justice, and nonviolent political change across the world.
