Abstract::Abstract:The Visakhapatnam has a special significance in the history of India as it is the gateway to
the costal South India. This is one of the fastest growing and populous cities in South India as well as
Andhra Pradesh located in the East Coast of India in the offshore of Bay of Bengal. Geographically
the city is located in 17o 42! North latitude and 82o 02! East on the cost of the Indian Ocean as a result
of the city experiences high humidity. The city is located on a major rail junction on the east-central
coast of India, about halfway between Kolkata and Chennai. The present study is mainly concerned
with origin and historicity of Visakhapatnam. It is known for rich Indian heritage and culture.
Historically, the Visakhapatnam was named after Visakha. In 260 BCE, under the rule of king Ashoka,
the city was a part of the Kalinga kingdom. Later, it came under the rule of the Andhra kings of Vengi.
Then it was ruled by the Pallava, the Chola and the Ganga dynasties. Since from beginning the rule of
Chalukya-Chola rule in coastal Andhra it has remarkable growth, making it one of India’s most lively
cities. It was in the 15th century that the city became a part of the Vijayanagara empire.
Visakhapatnam city is the newly industrializing city in coastal Andhra Pradesh, India. In this article, I
try to explore origin of historicity of Visakhapatnam past and present history.
